American Redstart
Setophaga ruticilla
Synopsis:
Breeds locally along wooded streams in the Blue Mountains. May
be less widespread in that area than historically.
Formerly (1970's) bred in the central Oregon Cascades (Davis-Odell-Crescent
Lakes), but it was not found there during the atlas
project. One year after completion of the atlas project (2000), pairs were found
breeding in Curry County (Cape Blanco) and
Deschutes County (Sisters - Indian Ford Creek).
Habitat Associations:
some
Northeast Mixed Conifer Forest (156691 acres)
Ponderosa Pine Forest/Woodland (231479 acres)
Streamside/Wetland Shrubland (2171 acres)
Relative Detectability:
Fairly easy to detect by sight and song, but difficult to
confirm nesting.
Challenge:
Determine if this species still breeds in Wallowa, Grant, and
northern Klamath Counties, and if it breeds more widely
than shown in Union, Umatilla, and Baker Counties. Check large deciduous
riparian woods in other coastal locations for possible
future nesting.
